Opera – A Look At The Life Of Mozart

Tuesday, February 14th, 2012

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born on January 27th 1756 in Salzburg, Austria to Leopold Mozart, who was also a composer and violinist, and his wife Anna Maria Pertl. The couple had seven children but only two survived. Wolfgang Amadeus and Anna born in 1951.
At just 4 years old Wolfgang’s talent for music was already startlingly evident. He was able to play the same pieces on the piano that his older sister could. At 5 years old Wolfgang had composed his first minuet and this was followed by his first symphony, which is said to have been composed when he was only 9 years old. Wolfgang and his sister went on a tour of Vienna with their father in 1792 where they played for various members of the aristocracy. Both children played piano and Wolfgang played the violin also. Their father arranged a longer tour of Europe for his children in 1763 and again the children performed for the aristocracy of several countries. Mozart was commissioned to compose his first opera at the age of 14 – it was called Mitridate, re di Ponto.
Mozart’s father tried to persuade him away from the life of a freelance composer steering him towards the idea that he could still live off his talent by becoming employed as part of a nobleman’s court. However it was not easy for Mozart to find a position working in the court of a member of the aristocracy because he was still so young. Mozart eventually found employment within the court of the Prince-Archbishop of Salzburg but continued to seek work elsewhere. Mozart found life in Salzburg too provincial and felt limited. He also wanted to achieve independence from his father who continually thwarted Mozart’s opportunities for romance. His father was keen for his son not to become embroiled in personal matters and keep on working and earning money for his family.
Mozart lasted in his position at the court of the Prince-Archbishop of Salzburg until 1781. He resigned after a bitter clash with the Prince-Archbishop five finger shoes , with his father unsurprisingly opposing his decision. The 25-year- old Mozart would not be deterred however and he moved to Vienna with the aim of working as a freelance composer and musician. Relations with his father went from bad to worse when Mozart chose to marry a poor singer Constanze Weber – a union his father was against.
Mozart stayed in Vienna for the next 9 years and spent his time composing, playing and teaching music. During this time Mozart composed some of his most famous pieces of work. Although Mozart was gaining much recognition for his work the latter part of his life was plagued with money problems and his anguish at the death of his father without reconciliation between the two. Mozart died suddenly at the age of 35 on December 5th 1791 from and unspecified febrile condition.

Birmingham Live Music Venues

Monday, February 6th, 2012

Birmingham is the UK’s second city and many fantastic music venues for people to see gigs and concerts. The best venues for this are the following;
O2 Academy
The new O2 Academy in Birmingham is where the former Dome Nightclub was located, which is conveniently situated near to both the Bullring and Arcadian in the City centre. Like the former Academy venue, the new venue has a multi-room operation with the main room having a capacity of 3,009 (of which there is a dedicated 600 capacity seated area) and two other rooms, the O2 Academy 2 with 600 and O2 Academy 3 with 250.
However in an improvement to the old academy, the venue has been designed to allow all three venues to be in use at the same time. Therefore the venue now has a full capacity of 3,859.
HMV Institute
After a £4 million refurbishment of the old Digbeth Institute (in Digbeth), the new HMV Institute reopened its doors on the 18th September 2010. The venue has already staged gigs by Mark Ronson and Kate Nash since it has been opened and is a new rival to the O2 Academy. The 2,400 capacity music venue has three rooms: the main auditorium with a 1,500 capacity, a smaller room for 600 people and the 300-capacity room known as ‘The Temple’.
LG Arena
The LG Arena (otherwise known as the National Exhibition Centre), is a multi-purpose complex that is well-known for staging concerts by major artists, such as Queen, Lady GaGa, Guns N’ Roses in the past – on account of it’s very large 16,000 capacity. The venue is actually based in Solihull, near to junction 6 of the M42 motorway.
National Indoor Arena
The NIA (otherwise known as the National Indoor Arena) is located alongside the Birmingham Canal Navigations Main Line’s Old Turn Junction and opposite the National Sea Life Centre in Brindleyplace. The venue has played host to a diverse range of artists such as Oasis, Coldplay, Prince, Destiny’s Child, and Paul McCartney, with artists such as Gorillaz and Elbow due to perform there. The capacity is able to seat up to 12,700 people.
Smaller Venues
The Flapper was described in music magazine the NME as ‘the epicentre of Birmingham’s indie scene’, which is situated by the NIA on Kingston Row. Hare & Hounds is also a small venue that hosts acts of all musical genres – but has a great reputation (like The Flapper) for putting on gigs by small new indie artists, like recent gigs by I Blame Coco and Girls. The Glee Club (which is a comedy club) is also known to host live music.
Andy Parker is the editor of Midlands music and entertainment website Electric Banana. The website offers a Birmingham gig guide and Birmingham music venue listings.

Sleeping Pills

Monday, January 16th, 2012

A VALE man fell asleep in the dock last week while awaiting sentence for drug possession.
Johnathan Dey, 33, had to be wakened by a police officer after he nodded off during proceedings at Dumbarton Sheriff Court.
The court had heard how Dey, of Milton Estate in Jamestown, was stopped by police on a footpath close to Auchenreoch Avenue, Dumbarton, at 5.45pm on June 17, after acting suspiciously.
Dey was searched under the Misuse of Drugs Act and he was found to have a packet of 16 tablets of diazepam – which aid sleep and also are used to relieve anxiety – in his waistband.
Dey was then interviewed and he admitted to police that the tablets were Valium. He refused to say how much they were worth, although the court heard they were valued at around 50p a tablet.
